Configuring Targets w ESXi

following instructions in your guide "iStorage Server:iSCSI SAN for ESX/ESXi Server " (using ESXi 4 - vshpere Client).
All works well until reaching the step that configures 'Storage Adapters'.
For both dynamic and static discovery, no action is possible because of an error:
The host bus adapter is not associated with a vmknic. To configure targets the adapter should be associated with a vmknic. ...
How is this association created?
