Feature Request for HA Sync

Post by bobcat7677 » Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:42 am

The software seems to do a good job of detecting a using a Sync channel for HA. However, it would be nice to be able to have more advanced configuration options around this. A couple ideas I had:

1. Be able to specify a "backup" sync channel to avoid sync problems if the primary channel fails.

2. Provide MPIO configuration for the sync channels so not only can bandwidth be aggregated across multiple channels for potentially better sync performance (depending on how it's configured), but also provide fail over if one channel experiences an outage.

Idea #2 would be the most desirable obviously since it provides both the resiliency that #1 would provide and a potential performance enhancement.

I'd agree having some kind of multiple-link / load balancing would be nice, but it doesn't appear that is where the performance bottleneck is currently. For example when doing a verify there is relatively little network traffic (checksum values are all that are being passed?), but performance is nowhere near maxing out my array (verifies run at 100 MB/s vs at least 350 MB/s that the arrays the images are hosted on are capable of).

Based on other posts in the forum, even users with 10 Gig networks are encountering suboptimal performance. Hopefully optimizations in future versions will improve performance to the point where network throughput will be the bottleneck.

I'd also like to request the ability to specify where the failover files are stored. By default they are in the Windows temporary directory. On many systems this definitely won't be located on the fastest or largest storage device. I've set my temp environment variable to my high-capacity / high-speed array for now, but it should be pretty easy to implement it as a user setting (which is a much better permanent fix).
